tomorrow i'm heading to the funeral of someone i knew very well in high school, vaguely well in college, and barely after that. Alex was the kind of person you always wish you could know better; a guy who was always funny, always willing, always opinionated, always up to something.

this also marks my 16th funeral since 2000. sixteen people in eight years, only one of which was a natural death. the rest have been car accidents, a drowning, a suicide, a gunshot, a house fire, leukemia that wasn't in remission as the doctors thought.

regrettably, Alex's passing falls into the "rest" category. it's a shock and a huge loss.
