the squirrel project

state radio, one of my favorite bands, has a component they do on tour called "service saturdays" in which fans gather to do a service project the day before or after a show. it's all organized by local people and it supports local work being done... and yours truly put together some fun for about thirty fans.

we met up with a guy named steve sullivan at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, who is running the Squirrel Project. we started with a short lecture about the history of squirrels, learning where they come from and what we can learn from tracking them.

we split off into groups of 4-6 people and were assigned maps, which we walked and marked with squirrel sightings; this would tell us about how the ecology was changing as steve compared the data over time. after about 90 minutes, we reconvened and discussed our findings :)

unfortunately i couldn't be in the photo because someone needed to take it - and i wanted steve to be in it!! but it's a good lookin bunch, eh? it felt really great to get outside, meet some new people, and do something good for the city - one of those little drops that help make the river of good that flows in.
